Forest School

Common Digs X Highfield Farm

This recreational day program operates one or two days a week at a variety of community-based settings. The Recreational Programming operates on 4-10 week semesters. Families can sign up for one or multiple semesters through out the year.

The Forest School program operates in a variety of different settings and contexts, all designed to support children’s rights to leisure time in nature. Children are given the freedom to spend the majority of time in nature whilst supported by Early Childhood Educators and Forest School practitioners.

The Common Digs Forest School in Calgary, Alberta, models the Forest School approach that has been well established in Europe since the 1950's. Research shows a multitude of reasons - intellectual, social, emotional, spiritual and physical - to get children outside spending great lengths of time playing, relaxing and just “being” in nature.

School Programs

Highfield Farm offers a large open space with tons of opportunity for learning. We offer interactive tours to school groups, and can adapt the focus of the tours to serve the purpose of your visit. Tours will be adjusted depending on the time of year and what is active on-site at the time.

Poop Class

10$/child

Poop Class is our standard school group offering and is suitable for ages 6-10yrs old. This program can be adapted for younger or older students upon request. It is a fun introduction to composting, soil science and growing food. This half day tour and class follows the soil nutrient cycle journey from worms to plants to food. Students will get their hands dirty in our worm bins, try some tasty vegetables from the garden (*seasonally dependent), and plant a seed in a pot made of cow poop to take home and grow.
